This is a short, self-paced walkthrough for evaluating a bourbon or rye -- appearance, aroma, palate, and finish -- and putting your own observations into words. It takes about 10-15 minutes with a glass in front of you, but you don't need one: every stage has an option for tasting along or just reading through.

  • No special equipment required -- a small glass and, ideally, a room-temperature pour is plenty. A tulip-shaped glass concentrates aroma better than a rocks glass, but either works.
  • This is about noticing and describing what's actually in the glass, not memorizing the 'correct' tasting notes -- there isn't one correct answer here.
  • Tasting is for adults of legal drinking age. You can complete every stage below without drinking anything -- just read the prompts and, where relevant, imagine or recall the sensation instead.

21+ only. If you'd rather not drink, use the "I'm not drinking along" option at each stage -- you'll still get the full walkthrough.
