Craft Distilling

Key Characteristics

Type
Philosophy / scale, not geography
Distinguishing Rule
No distinct legal category exists; a "craft" distillery follows the same federal bourbon/whiskey rules (27 CFR Part 5) as the largest producers. It's a scale and philosophy distinction, not a regulatory one.

Why This Region Matters

Craft isn't a region; it's a scale and an attitude found inside every one of the other three. A craft distillery is usually working with a fraction of a major producer's barrel count, which turns constraint into an opening for experimentation: unusual mash bills, secondary cask finishes, and; common enough to be its own small-producer signature; smaller barrels, whose higher surface-area-to-volume ratio speeds up wood contact and lets a 2-year-old release taste older than its age statement suggests.

Production & Aging Environment

Climate Effect
Entirely dependent on the individual distillery's own location; a craft distillery in Texas ages like Texas, one in Kentucky ages like Kentucky.
