← Myths & FAQs Storage & Serving

Does it matter whether you store bourbon standing up or lying on its side?

Short answer: Yes; unlike wine, bourbon should be stored upright.

Wine bottles get stored on their side to keep the cork wet, since a dried-out cork lets in air and ruins the wine. Bourbon works the opposite way: its much higher alcohol content will slowly break down a natural cork on prolonged contact, dissolving it and tainting the whiskey rather than preserving it. Store a bottle on its side for a long stretch and the cork itself becomes the problem.

Keep bottles upright, out of direct light, and at a reasonably stable temperature. A cork does still benefit from occasional moisture, so tilting a bottle briefly every so often; rather than storing it flat; is enough to keep it from drying out completely.

Practical Takeaway

Store bottles standing up, not lying down; that alone avoids the most common bourbon storage mistake.
