Old Fashioned

The oldest cocktail on this list by most accounts, and the template every other 'spirit + sweetener + bitters' drink descends from. Bartenders argue endlessly over muddled fruit vs. a clean build — this recipe is the clean build.

  • 2 ozBourbon
  • 1 tsp / 1 cubeSimple syrup (or a sugar cube)
  • 2-3 dashesAngostura bitters
  • 1, for garnishOrange peel

Rocks glass

  1. If using a sugar cube, muddle it with the bitters in the glass until dissolved. If using syrup, just combine syrup and bitters directly.
  2. Add bourbon and a large ice cube, then stir until well chilled and slightly diluted, about 30 seconds.
  3. Express the orange peel over the drink to release its oils, then drop it in as garnish.

This is a spirit-forward drink with minimal dilution, so the bourbon's own character carries the glass. A higher-proof, standard-mash-bill bottle holds up well; a low-proof pour tends to disappear under the sugar and bitters.
