Rye-based
Manhattan
Traditionally a rye drink, though plenty of bars pour it with bourbon and call it a 'Manhattan' anyway — ask for it 'perfect' for equal parts sweet and dry vermouth, or 'up' vs. 'on the rocks' for how it's served.
Ingredients
- 2 ozRye whiskey
- 1 ozSweet vermouth
- 2 dashesAngostura bitters
- 1, for garnishBrandied or maraschino cherry
Glassware Coupe
Method
- Combine rye, vermouth, and bitters in a mixing glass with ice.
- Stir until well chilled, about 30 seconds.
- Strain into a chilled coupe and garnish with a cherry.
What to Look For
The vermouth softens and sweetens the pour, so a rye with real backbone — enough proof and spice to stay distinct once mixed — keeps this from tasting like watered-down vermouth.
